Want to overcome your shopping addiction?

1. Know your trigger

Discover the source of your shopping addiction. What turns you on to shop? Yet though a shopaholic’s habits may seem senseless to an outsider, it’s not. Those with an addiction to shopping assume that they are completely responsible and they are shopping for a purpose – normally to meet a requirement.

It’s not so simple to self-analyze personally, and few times we do need expert help. But, knowing the psychological need that’s kicking the urge to shop can support you defeat your addiction.

2. DON’T FREQUENTLY “HANG OUT” AT THE MALL

This is simple, but if you discover yourself hanging out at the mall “just to waste time”, then it’s time to discover other activities to do (preferably the ones which don’t require spending money). Here are a few alternative activities you might like:

  1. Take a walk
  2. Go for a road trip
  3. Attend a free play
  4. Visit a library/puzzle solving zones on free days
  5. Relax at the seashore
  6. Take a free health class
  7. Check out a free drama show
  8. Have a game with friends

3. UNSUBSCRIBE TO ALL RETAILER EMAILS

If you notice yourself being motivated to spend every time an offer email shows up in your inbox, then you must click “unsubscribe”. I suggest unsubscribing from ALL retailer emails to withdraw the urge to spend.

Originally, when I began unsubscribing to retailer emails, I waited on the mailing list for a few select stores. This was a big blunder though because I still felt motivated to spend more whenever I got an email. If you’re serious about winning a shopping addiction, then you require to unsubscribe from all retailers (it is more of a “pause” state).

4. SET RULES FOR YOUR WARDROBE

Now that you’ve decluttered your wardrobe, it’s time to set rules for your wardrobe. For example, when I was working to win my shopping addiction, I executed a rule to only buy pieces in neutral colors (black, gray, white, navy, and so on).

This didn’t indicate I went out to purchase a complete new wardrobe in neutral colors. Rather, if I needed something, such as a new winter coat, I would purchase it in a neutral color. By having a wardrobe that focused on neutral colors, it was simpler to mix and match items.

5. DO THE NO NEW CLOTHING CHALLENGE

If you’ve been trying to gradually destroy your shopping addiction, but are still fighting with your triggers, then you might require leaving shopping entirely.

Going cold turkey isn’t so simple, but few times it’s necessary if you want to stop your poor spending addiction. In this case, I suggest doing no new clothing challenge for 30 days. The rules are easy: don’t purchase any clothing, footwear, or accessories for a whole 30 days (or longer).
